I believe so. The default is normally like this, but when the threads are active, the secondary sort is by latest reply to keep active threads on top, so the order jumps around.
Based on this information, would you still want have it just ordered by creation date, latest first, regardless of activity?
EDIT: Hmmm, I just realized that when you say "messages" you may be talking about the posts within the threads. It is annoying to get to the latest post when the threads are long. However, I don't think these can be re-ordered. Some forums have a functionality that takes you to the latest post when you open it, but I am not sure we can do that here. I'll have to check.
EDIT2: Nope, I don't see a way to get to the latest post in a thread automatically.

I don't know of a way to automatically get the newest post first either. But I use "New Topics" link at the top of the forum to see all threads with new posts in them rather than clicking through the boards and sub-boards. I do the latter when I'm looking for a specific thread because that's easier.
