The General Assembly met on 2/27/2012 at the Sun Shoppe & Cafe at 7 pm. There were 11 attendees. The meeting was held in an informal open discussion format.
Attendees discussed the pursuit of several actions including:
1) #F29 Shut down the corporations - national call to action day on Web Feb. 29 by Occupy Portland to "shut down" the corporations that participate in ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council), which lobbies to our government relentlessly. Local corporations in ALEC, which could be targets for this action, include Bank of America and Wal-mart. OMF members agreed that there was not enough time to plan and execute this action properly, therefore no formal action will be taken on it. REJECTED
2) 99% Spring - National campaign sponsored by MoveOn.org to facilitate training on non-violent direct action the week of April 9-15. Moveon.org will provide the materials and regional host training in 18 citites. OMF members Evanne and Gary L. volunteered to facilitate the training locally, others are encouraged to volunteer; Mandy will find out from Occupy Orlando staff if they intend to participate so that OMF can take part in their regional host training March 24-25th. Mireille will research the venue to possibly include a local library, community center or the Knowledge Exchange. APPROVED
3) Florida Coastal Cleanup sponsored by Ocean Conservacy through Keep Brevard Beautiful. OMF team would like to participate in cleaning our shores through this program to take place September 15th, 2012. Mireille will make contact with Keep Brevard Beautiful to schedule and get details. More information forthcoming as the date nears. APPROVED
Dominick discussed taking advantage of a local email distribution list to spread the word about OMF and recruit new members. Some OMF members felt this was spamming and would bring ill-will toward OMF, therefore it was rejected as an OMF action. Mandy suggested Dom take independent action under his name if he felt strongly about it.
Evanne asked members to step up in helping to plan and organize actions, particularly in the media working group. Gary L. said he can design materials, such as flyers and hand-outs, but needs to be prodded and agreed to be receptive to pressure.
Barbara Boren discussed her paper "Middle Class Deficit Reduction Plan" which included points on government corruption, taxation, healthcare, education and national defense and related suggestions for improving our country's situation and economy.
We had a few new visitors; Barbara, occupy movement (OWS) savvy part-time Florida resident and her two friends from up north (New Jersey). OMF thanks them for joining us and giving us their insight and opinions on important issues facing the 99%.
Friday's foreclosure fraud awareness action at Brevard Sheriff's Office was confirmed - March 2, 2012 at 4 pm. Several members asked why the Sheriff's office? As seen in the recently "Occupied" Arturo De Los Santos case (huff.to/whgVN3) in Los Angeles, the Sheriff can delay enforcing eviction court orders, giving homeowners more time to resolve their case. This is the issue facing one of our Occupiers, Ron Van Dyke, and we hope to help him stay in his home until he can resolve all the legal matters surrounding his foreclosure. The meeting location was discussed as shown below:
The location of the next GA on Saturday March 3rd at 3:30 pm was discussed and confirmed as Holmes Park, also known as "Manatee" Park at 914 Melbourne Ave. OMF will try this location and determine if it is convenient enough to keep as the permanent location going forward. Other possible locations suggested include Fee Ave Park on 1609 Babcock St. to be discussed if necessary. Manatee Park is shown below:
The meeting adjourned at 8:45 pm.
