The General Assembly met on 3/17/2012 at Holmes Park at 3:30 pm. There were 6 attendees. The meeting was held in an informal open discussion format.
Attendees discussed the pursuit of several activities and shared ideas including:
1) Joe Cenker of Melbourne Florida ISO announced an upcoming ISO event - Acclaimed activist and author Sherry Wolf will be speaking at the Henegar Center for the Arts on Wednesday, March 28th at 6-8pm as part of her state-wide speaking tour. Sherry's talk will be called "Socialism: What it Is and What it Isn't, but will also talk about her experiences struggling for LGBTQ equality, women's liberation, Muslim rights, and especially recent work in the Occupy Movement. Per Joe "this is a rare opportunity to see a speaker like this in Melbourne, and everyone is invited! If you've ever been interested in the much maligned and misunderstood "S" word, this is your chance to learn more in a friendly, open environment. There will be free food and books for sale." Joe asked OMF for help in promoting the event. Because of Sherry Wolf's work with OWS, the OMF web group will announce it on the website as described above and will also send out a message on the announcement email list in support.
2) The Daily Bread has several flexible volunteer opportunities and members agreed we should schedule an activity/event as a group. Jessica will visit the Daily Bread this week to find out more information and make concrete plans for date and time. She brought applications for members.
3) James spoke about the "Zombie Walk" event discussed at the last Direct Action Working Group meeting (DAWG) and possible logistics, including start and stop locations and whether to make it a group or scattered march for effect. Plans will be finalized at the next DAWG meeting.
4) Since we are unable to promote our events on the existing Facebook community page, the group discussed the creation of another FB community/fan page to better promote our events to the local community at large. Consensus was reached on creating the page. The new page is at facebook.com/occupymelbournefl.
5) Gary P. introduced the idea of doing a car wash event for fundraising to pay for promotional materials and incidentals. He has a venue/location contact that is willing to entertain the idea as long as members don't bring politically charged signs and banners. The group is willing to go forward with this event if logistics can be worked out. Gary will elaborate on the idea at the next DAWG meeting.
6) The group discussed the need to create promotional materials for events and for promotion of the group. Ideas included flyers, stickers, cards, plus buttons and t-shirts to wear at events. A few members will present ideas and draft samples. Mireille will have cards made.
7) Briefly discussed the need for a treasurer if we are to do fundraising events as mentioned in point 5. No conclusions will be reached until such time that we definitively plan and schedule a fundraising event.
8) We need to start promoting 99% Spring event! Flyers/handouts need to be made. Ask Gary L. for flyer ideas.
The meeting adjourned at 5:00 pm. BS session followed.
