These expectations are simply what I came up with, if amendments are desired, reply to this thread.
[li] Be vigilant, observant, and watchful
[/li][li] Mediate between parties if a verbal confrontation happens
[/li][li] Remain non-violent if possible, even if it’s necessary to usher or escort someone away from the altercation
[/li][li] Politely remind people we’re a peaceful organization when necessary – leading by example
[/li][li] Be aware of Protestor Rights and support educating protestors of them; assisting in preventing arrests thusly
[/li][li] “On Shift” PK’s should be labeled with a white arm band or PK/Name Tag (official MEL PK tags in the works)
[/li][li]Be watchful for potential trouble and share with other Peace Keepers (this requires a bit of behavioral analysis and judgment)
[/li][li] As necessary, escort participants to their cars (such as in late night meetings where safety may be a concern)
[/i] [/li][/ul]
**”On Shift” meaning you signed up to be an active Peace Keeper during the event/meeting etc, all who intend to be active PK’s need to be labeled and are considered On Shift.
[li] All General expectations apply
[/li][li] Sign up to be On Shift at an event must be completed by contacting Remmy [occupymelbournefl+pk@gmail.com]
[/li][li] Touch Base with PK Facilitator (Remmy) prior to Event for event specific expectations
[/li][li] Assisting in getting people across cross walks when necessary
[/li][li] Work closely with event coordinators to be sure to be where Peace Keepers are needed most
[/li][li] Monitor and act as necessary for ensuring traffic isn’t obstructed, views of traffic aren’t obstructed, and sidewalks aren’t blocked for passers by
[/li][li] Kindly, even empathetically discourage Occupiers from confronting/bad mouthing or provoking outside parties such as (but not limited to) News Crews, Police, Fundamentalist groups etc (Remember, we want to promote peace)
[/i][/li][/ul]
[li] All General expectations apply
[/li][li] Help the Facilitators remain on process by assisting to quell any verbal arguments or disagreements (This may mean offering to pull the two aside where the PK can mediate and let them talk it out away from the group)
[/li][li] Assist in getting people settled to promote timeliness at the start of the meeting, any breaks and at meeting end
[/li][li] Touch Base with PK Facilitator (Remmy) prior to meeting for meeting specific expectations
[/i][/li][/ul]
[li] Observant
[/li][li] Situational/Risk Assessment
[/li][li] Behavioral Assessment
[/li][li] Negotiation/Mediation
[/li][li] Physical health (There may be situations that require you to step in and physical restrain someone to break up a fight etc)
[/li][li] Patience
[/li][li] Ability to express Empathy
[/li][li] Knowledge of Protestor rights
[/li][li] Knowledge of Traffic laws and patters as they pertain to sign waves, protests, marches etc
[/li][li] Ability to be on your feet for several hours at a time
[/li][li] Ability to follow direction as well as offer direction to others
[/li][li] Ability to remain calm even in chaotic or disruptive situations
[/li][li] Communicating in a clear and concise manner
[/li][li] (Not required, but desired) Bi-Lingual (Spanish especially)
[/li][li] Have a phone or walkie-talkie on hand for communication purposes (Walkies may be supplies at a later time)
[/li][li] Ability to remain an objective party despite personal feelings, opinions or beliefs
[/li][li] More may be added later
[/i][/li][/ul]
** Not all of the above listed are necessary to be a Peace Keeper, but the more you have, the better
